  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 18, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was nominated for presidency at the Republican National Convention.  On this date in 1980,  Mount St. Helens erupted in southwestern Washington leading to 57 human deaths and the loss of over 210 square miles of wilderness including countless wildlife and fish.  The volcano still remains active, but no eruptions have occurred on the same scale as the one in 1980.  In pop culture, on May 18, 1968 the toy company Mattel debuted its first Hot Wheels car, the Custom Camaro.  It was soon followed by fifteen more to make the “Original Sweet 16.”  Since that time, countless Hot Wheels cars have made the shelves.  On May 18, 2001, the comedy Shrek made its nationwide release in the U.S. and it would eventually become the first animated movie to win an Academy Award.  On May 18, 2004, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson became the oldest player to pitch a perfect game.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 15, 1765, the British Parliament passed the Quartering Acts requiring locations and conditions for British soldiers to be provided room and board in Colonial homes or businesses.  This did not go well for the British, it would be one of the signature grievances by colonists en route to the eventual American Revolution.  On this date in 1942, a bill establishing a women’s corp in the U.S. Army became a law, creating the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corp and providing women official military status.  In pop culture, Mickey Mouse made his debut on this date in 1928.  Also on this date, in 1940 the McDonald’s hamburger stand opened in San Bernardino, California.  By 1955, there were nine locations and, in 1961, McDonald’s was trademarked.  Several years later, Ronald McDonald entered as the iconic fast food representative and the term “golden arches” joined the American vocabulary in 1967.  Today, there are over 40,000 McDonald’s locations in more than 100 nations.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 14, 1787, delegates assembled in Philadelphia to begin the peaceful transition of government under the Articles of Confederation to a new government–eventually leading to the creation and adoption of the U.S. Constitution.  On May 14, 1804, Lewis and Clark began their now famous expedition from the American Midwest to the Pacific coast.  100 years later on this date, America would host its first Olympic Games in St. Louis, Missouri.  On May 14, 1973, the first U.S. space station Skylab was launched.  On May 14, 1998, the last episode of the iconic Seinfeld aired.  The show developed into a landmark of American popular culture and is considered one of the most popular sitcoms of all time.  Not bad for a show about nothing.  Famous birthdays on this date include film directors George Lucas, Robert Zemickis, and Sofia Coppola, actress Miranda Cosgrove, and football player Rob Gronkowski.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TE Cougars baseball team battled back from a four-run deficit on Wednesday to defeat Vernon Center MS 9-6 in extra innings. Trailing as they entered the top of the fifth, TE mounted a crucial two-out rally, stringing together three hits to score five runs and take a 6-5 lead. The big inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Wes Prather, a two-run single by Corbyn Falco, and an RBI triple from Dom Caputo.  The game eventually pushed into extra innings where the Cougars secured the win in the top of the eighth. A three-run surge, sparked by singles from Grady Moynihan and Zach Powers, gave TE a 9-6 advantage that they wouldn't give up. Powers earned the win on the mound with an outstanding performance, pitching six and two-thirds innings while striking out eight batters and allowing just two runs on five hits. Lyle Dresser took over for the final frame to collect the save and close things out.  It was a highly productive day at the plate, with the Cougars tallying 13 hits overall. Moynihan paced the lineup with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Tino Durbois also added two doubles of his own. Falco, Moynihan, and Powers shared the team lead in run production, driving in two runs apiece. The comeback victory improves the Cougars' perfect record to 10-0 on the season. TE will look to keep their momentum going today as they travel to play the Tolland Falcons.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 13, 1897, the Columbia Electric Vehicle under the entrepreneurship of Albert Pope, conducted the first demonstration of an electric car.  Topping out at 15 mph, the vehicle was marketed as the next step in transportation to replace the horse-drawn carriage.  Electricity, however, was very expensive and the electric power, battery charged vehicle was quickly surpassed by gas-powered vehicles.  On May 13, 1973 a famous showdown occurred between Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court.  A critic of women’s tennis, Riggs originally challenged Billy Jean King who initially refused.  Riggs defeated Court, but Billie Jean King would accept a second invitation to play.  She beat Riggs on September 20, 1973 and won $100,000.  The publicity surrounding these events helped elevate the notoriety of the women’s game which became an even bigger win for the sport of tennis.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TEMS Cougars softball team brought the energy yesterday afternoon with an exciting 21-6 win over Ellington Middle School! Leading the way was Raegan Burnham, who had an incredible game with TWO inside-the-park home runs and six RBIs! Talk about a superstar performance! The Cougars came out strong in the first inning with big hits from Claire Kaminski, Leighton Edwards, and Raegan Burnham to quickly take the lead. Even after Ellington tied the game early, TEMS answered right back and never looked back. The third and fourth innings were packed with action as the Cougars exploded for 14 total runs. Big plays came from Lilianne Miles, Arianna Coco, Mollie Dumond, Emma Rutkauskas, Claire Kaminski, Leighton Edwards, and Raegan Burnham, who kept the offense rolling all game long.Arianna Coco had a huge day at the plate, collecting four hits, while Leighton, Claire, and Emma also added multiple hits for the Cougars. In the circle, Emma Rutkauskas earned the win with six strikeouts in four innings. The Cougars finished with an impressive 21 hits and even turned a double play on defense off of a line drive to Arianna at second base where she then threw the runner out at first! If the weather holds up today, TEMS will hit the road as they travel to Vernon Middle School for another matchup. Let’s go Cougars!

  • The TE baseball team kept their perfect season alive on Tuesday, defeating the Windsor Locks Wildcats 7-0 behind a combined shutout from three pitchers. Starter Weston Durbois earned the win, pitching three and one-third scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and striking out four. Wesley Prather and Lyle Dresser then took over in relief, shutting down the Wildcats' offense to finish the game.  On the offensive side, the Cougars got on the board early in the first inning when Grady Moynihan hit a single that brought in two runs. They added to their lead in the third with an RBI single from Corbyn Falco, making it 3-0 before eventually scoring four more. It was a solid day at the plate for the whole lineup, with Dom Caputa, Falco, and Prather collecting two hits apiece, while Zach Powers and Durbois each contributed a double. The victory improves the Cougars' undefeated record to 9-0 as they hit the road for a game at Vernon Center MS today. Good luck, boys!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 11, 1796, the iconic Old State House building in Hartford, Connecticut opened for business.  Built with brownstone quarried right from Portland, Connecticut, the State House served as the Connecticut capitol for 83 years before moving to the current Capitol Building.  The Capitol housed all three branches of Connecticut government during its run and was the scene of historic events including the Hartford Convention in 1814 and the Amistad trial in 1841.  After a long period of neglect, the Old State House underwent extensive renovations and reopened as a museum in 1996, its 200th year anniversary.  Also on this date in 1858, the State of Minnesota entered the union as the 32nd state.  On May 11, 1910, Glacier National Park was established in the Rocky Mountain wilderness. Famous birthdays on this date include composer Irving Berlin and actress and singer Sabrina Carpenter.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TE baseball team kept their undefeated streak alive Friday by defeating Sage Park MS 13-3 to improve to 8-0 on the season. The Cougars' offense exploded in the second inning, plating seven runs to break the game open early.  The second-inning was fueled by RBI doubles from Miles Perez and Weston Durbois, along with a timely RBI single from Dom Caputo. Durbois provided the pop in the middle of the lineup all afternoon, finishing the day with two doubles and three RBIs.  TE’s 13-hit attack was relentless. Corbyn Falco stayed hot with three hits, including two doubles, while Grady Moynihan also turned in a three-hit performance. Caputo added to the hit parade with two singles of his own. On the mound, Zack Powers earned the win for TE. Powers was efficient over four innings of work, allowing just two hits and three runs while striking out four. The Cougars stayed hot on defense and didn't commit a single error in the field.  The boys look to carry this momentum on the road as they travel to Windsor Locks for their next game on Tuesday.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 8, 1877, the first annual New York Bench Show of Dogs took place.  Now known as the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show, it is the second oldest running sporting event in the U.S. (second only to the Kentucky Derby).  On May 8, 1886 the iconic beverage Coca-Cola was developed and originally marketed as a cure-all tonic.  On May 7, 1945, the Allied Nations throughout the world including the United States celebrated V-E Day with the end of World War Two on the European front.  On this date in 1963, the American release of Dr. No, the first James Bond movie starring Sean Connery began an incredible run of Bond films found extremely popular by the American public.  On May 8, 1976, the theme from “Welcome Back, Kotter” became the number one pop song in America.  Continuing with pop culture, on this date in 2010, Betty White became the oldest “Saturday Night Live” host when she was the special guest at the age of 88.  Famous birthdays on this date include the 33rd President of the United States Harry S. Truman, poet Phillis Wheatley, boxer Sonny Liston, and comedian Don Rickles.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

Wesley Prather was dominant in relief, striking out the side in a hitless final frame.  Offensively, the Cougars tallied 13 hits in total. Moynihan led the way with three hits, while Stead and Yin each collected two. TE looks to keep the momentum going as they host Sage Park today. Come out and support your first-place Cougars!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 7, 1915, a German submarine sank the Lusitania, a British cruiseliner that also had American passengers.  Nearly 130 Americans were lost and the event indirectly led to U.S. entrance in World War I a couple of years later.  On May 7, 1992, the 27th Amendment received the necessary votes after the state of Michigan ratified it–this amendment concerned the salary increases to the U.S. Congress members.  On May 7, 2009, Catherine Ralston, a 12-year old, received the title of “Baker of the Year” after participating in an Easy-Bake Oven baking competition.  Her winning creation was a “Queen of Hearts Strawberry Tart.” The iconic Easy-Bake Oven sold over 500,000 units in its launch year of 1963 by the company Kenner, now known as Hasbro.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  This is a sad day in Connecticut sports history–on May 6, 1997, the owner of the then Hartford Whalers announced he was moving the NHL team to North Carolina and renamed them the Carolina Hurricanes.  The Whalers had been playing in Hartford since 1975 beginning as the New England Whalers, eventually renamed as the Hartford Whalers in 1979.  Though the team had varying levels of success, it had a tremendously loyal Connecticut following and Hartford Whalers merchandise still remains popular and profitable for distributors.  It remains a hope of many that the Hartford Whalers be resurrected and return to the Nutmeg State.  On this date in 1998, Steve Jobs of Apple introduced the first iMac, a personal computer that became widely successful and helped revive the company which was struggling at the time.  Sticking with pop culture, on this date in 1957 and 2004 respectively, the final episode of I Love Lucy and Friends–both extremely popular comedy shows of their respective eras. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Yesterday showcased an absolute thriller on the baseball diamond. The TE baseball team battled it out for 10 innings to secure a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Kennedy Middle School!  The game was an intense pitcher's duel from the start. TE pitchers struck out 15, while JFK sat down 12. Dom Caputa stepped on the hill first.  The pitcher gave up three hits and one run over five and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking two. He was magnificent.  Lyle Dresser came in relief and pitched brilliantly to  earn the win. The hurler allowed four hits and zero runs over three and one-third innings, striking out four and walking none.  The Cougars initially got on the board in the fifth with a clutch single from Wes Prather. But after Kennedy tied it up late, the game went into extra innings. Finally, in the top of the tenth, Corbyn Falco smashed a double deep to left field, bringing Prather home for what would be the game-winning run!   Prather and Zach Powers led the offense with two hits each, while Caysen Lewie chipped in by drawing three walks.  But the drama wasn't over yet. In the bottom of the tenth, Kennedy had the tying and winning runs on second and third with no outs. With the game on the line, Coach S. summoned Zach Powers from the bullpen.  Completely unfazed by the pressure, the right-hander proceeded to strike out the heart of the lineup: the number 2, 3, and 4 hitters. He slammed the door to earn the save and end the game!  The Cougars improved to a perfect 6-and-0 on the season. Come out and support your undefeated Cougars as they host East Hartford this Thursday! Go Cougars!

  • The TEMS Cougars Softball team dominated Tolland Middle school  yesterday with an impressive 19-1 victory at Timothy Edwards Middle School! Raegan Burnham was the standout player of the game, driving in 4 runs on just 2 hits. The highlight? An inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning that scored 3 runs. She also singled in the third inning for another RBI. Pitcher Emma Rutkauskas had an incredible day on the mound, striking out 13 batters! She gave up only 1 hit and 1 run over 5 innings. Emma also helped out at the plate, going 3-for-4 and leading the team with 6 RBIs.The Cougars came out firing in the third inning, scoring a massive 13 runs on 9 hits. Claire Kaminski, Teresa Gudauskas, Rylie Goudreault, and Arianna Coco all contributed with hits, and multiple runners scored on an error as well.Claire Kaminski led the way with 4 hits in 4 at bats, while Raegan Burnham and Arianna Coco also collected multiple hits. Brooke Dixon chipped in with a hit as well.  The Cougars showed great plate discipline, earning 8 walks as a team. Congratulations ladies!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 5, 1890, Mary Kies of Killingly, Connecticut became the first woman to receive a patent in American history.  Due to destroyed records, it is difficult to track down the specifics of her patent, but she was known to help manufacture women’s hats using a patented process of weaning straw and silk together.  Coincidentally, on this date in 1868, Martha Jones became the first Black woman to receive a U.S. patent on a machine that could husk and shell corn in one procedure.  On May 5, 1904, American pitcher Cy Young logged the first perfect game of the modern era with no runners reaching first base.  He pitched for the Boston Americans who were facing the Philadelphia Athletics.  On this date in 1973, the American racehorse Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby capturing the coveted U.S. Triple Crown in horse racing.  On May 5, 1978, Ben & Jerry’s opened its first ice cream shop.  Happy Cinco de Mayo today as this is an annual celebration that is more popular in America than in Mexico as it is a celebration of Mexican-American culture.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.
